ABOUT ME
Paints, textiles and threads have been constant companions in my life. Whilst working as a professional actor, I received my degree at Wimbledon School of Art, specialising in Theatre Costume Interpretation. I worked in this industry for many years before setting up my own bespoke business, creating unique garments for clients. In recent years my art practice has become my main focus and passion.
My art practice is primarily nature led. 'What is hidden, and what is beyond?’ are questions that haunt me. Memories held within the landscape, a sense of place, tracks and landlines leading the eye forward to new horizons, are all repeated themes. I am deeply committed to the land - the duality of its permanence and fragility. This 'melancholy transience' inspires my practise, and my art represents both that delicacy and strength. Walking is an intrinsic part of my practice. I often walk and sketch, but, just as often, the act of walking is part of the art. I am conscious of the footprints of those who have gone before, and the relationship they had with the land.
Back in my garden studio, I use my sketches as inspiration. Often my landscapes are memories of a place - a semi-abstracted essence and energy I remember, rather than a specific view. I apply dye, print and paint to various combinations of natural fabrics, and build up layers to 'paint' the scene . Stitch allows me to capture line and texture - the energy of place.
I live in the same row of cottages where my 4 x grandfather and his family lived, and this sense of belonging and continuity are important to me. I grow vegetables in the garden, knowing that this soil is part of my history.
